Step-by-Step Guide: How to Install Artificial Grass Yourself Like a Pro

Phase 1: Site Preparation & Base Construction (The Most Critical Step)

Tools Needed: Shovel, rake, plate compactor, wheelbarrow, stakes, string line.

1. Excavate: Remove existing sod/topsoil to a depth of 70-100mm (3-4 inches).
2. Install Edging: Secure sturdy plastic or treated timber edging around the perimeter.
3. Create Sub-base: Spread and compact a 50-75mm layer of crushed rock or limestone aggregate. This is your drainage foundation. Use a plate compactor to achieve a firm, level base.
4. Add Sharp Sand Layer: Lay and compact a 25mm layer of sharp sand for final smoothing and leveling.

Phase 2: Turf Laydown & Seaming

Tools Needed: Utility knife, seaming tape, adhesive, brush, carpet stretcher.

1. Roll Out Grass: Unroll turf and let it acclimate for 1-2 hours. Ensure pile direction is consistent.
2. Trim & Fit: Trim edges, leaving a slight overhang against edging.
3. Seam Pieces: For multiple rolls, butt edges together tightly. Lay seaming tape underneath, glue, and press edges down. Use a carpet stretcher for a seamless, tensioned finish.

Phase 3: Finishing & Infill

Tools Needed: Stiff brush, drop spreader, silica sand or rubber granules.

1. Secure Perimeter: Nail or stake turf every 100-150mm along edges.
2. Apply Infill: Use a drop spreader to evenly apply 1-2 kg/sqm of silica sand. This keeps blades upright, adds weight, and improves drainage.
3. Brush Fibers: Power brush against the grain to lift fibers and distribute infill.
