Remove existing grass, rocks, and debris. Excavate to a depth of 3-4 inches (7.5-10 cm) for landscape turf; deeper for sports fields with more sub-base. Ensure a slight grade (1-2%) for drainage away from structures.
This is the most critical step for longevity. Use a compacted base of crushed stone or decomposed granite (3-4 inches). Use a plate compactor to create a solid, stable, and level foundation. A poor base is the #1 cause of turf failure.
Roll out a professional-grade geotextile weed barrier fabric over the compacted sub-base. Overlap seams by 6-8 inches. This prevents weed growth while allowing water to drain through.
